'Sea-Change', Arnis Residency, Arnis (DE)
HD Single-channel video with perfomative act (17 mins) & installation in collaboration with Thomas Pellerey Grogan
Materials: steel, rope, sailcloth, algae, endoscope and contact microphone; dimensions variable
Located in a water wharf, in which maritime vessels are repaired, this project examines the notion of the Klabautermann, a mystical sea creature said to inhabit waterways surrounding the Baltic and North seas, as a link between human and nature.
In the video projection and live performance, the microscopic world of the ship’s kobold (creature) is made tangible; technological devices meet myths and rituals. An inspection camera is used to document a micro scale: expanding it to macro. A contact mic records the vibrations of the environment: on a minute level, enlarging its audibility.
During the performance, the artists interact with a pre-arranged set, including a tunnel, local objects, and materials, performing an attempt to connect with this mythical creature — enabling new forms of sensitivity towards complex ecologies.
