An altar to thoughts on strike, 2020
Goldsmiths MFA Studios, London, UK
Mixed media installation (materials: notes from Julian Assange meeting in 2014, replica candle bought for Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy, HD Video on iPad showing boxer Tyson Fury entering a Las Vegas boxing ring on a throne, excerpt from BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour episode discussing Brexit, audio except from film 'Being There', text from song 'Freed from Desire', two dried daffodils, Blu-tack, college locker, lock, cropped photograph of a dancer, description of Harun Farocki's work from ArtForum, steel poles, steel fittings, string)
Sustained industrial action across British universities in 2020, and then viral contagion shutting down education across the world: breaches in linearity abounded. This work looks at representations of (confused) humanity: emblems of people trying to be “free”, small gestures in which the visual as well as symbolic aspect of the poetic is important in a state of compromise.
